When And How Can Celery Allergy Occur?

An allergic reaction to celery usually happens when it’s eaten, but it can also occur when celery is rubbed on the skin. Unlike some allergens, celery doesn’t always lose its potency when it’s heated, so any dish or processed food containing celery, cooked or not, must be avoided.

Allergy to carrots is more common among celery allergy sufferers.

Celery root is more allergenic than celery stalk, but both can cause reactions. Celery spice is also twice as likely to cause an allergic reaction. Celery spice is made from dried celery root and is found in many foods, including celery salt, which is a mixture of salt and celery spice. 

Other Things To Watch Out For

If you’re allergic to celery, there’s a strong possibility you might be allergic to birch and/or mugwort pollen too. In Central Europe birch pollen and celery are strongly linked, while in Southern Europe mugwort pollen and celery are related.

Celery is part of the Apiaceae family along with parsley, coriander, cumin, aniseed, pepper and bell pepper. So if you’re allergic to celery you might also react to one of these. Allergy to carrots is also more common among celery allergy sufferers.
