What Are Genetically Modified Foods?
Genetically modified (GM) foods have had their genes altered, or are made from ingredients that have undergone this process.
Genes determine the characteristics of every living organism. They make broccoli the colour green or decide how tall you will grow.
Genes are made from DNA. Scientists can change the DNA of plants, animals or even bacteria. After they have changed the DNA of one organism, they are able to insert it into a different organism.
For example golden rice is a genetically modified type of rice containing large amounts of beta-carotenes, which the body converts into vitamin A. In this instance, three new genes were added to make golden rice - two from daffodils and one from a bacterium.
