ORGANIC MILK COSTS SOAR
27 July 2008: We might soon have to start taking our coffee black, as a report from The Guardian tells us the soaring cost of milk production is sending national production into decline.
This is particularly effecting the organic sector, where signs the market was in decline were indicated by the sharp drop in organic certification of farms.
Supply of organic milk rose by only one per cent last year, in comparison to six per cent the previous three years. Richard Hamptom of Organic Milk Supplier Co-operative (OMSCo) said:
"The cost of organic production has risen faster than conventional production. The risk we now run is that farmers will abandon organic production."
