45 MINUTES IS ALL IT TAKES TO CONTROL DIABETES

28 July 2008: Good news for diabetes sufferers arrives from The Guardian. Scientists at Newcastle University have found that for those with the disease, just 45 minutes of walking every day can limit the impact of it.

The study concerned those with late onset or type 2 diabetes and found that daily walking made their bodies better at storing sugar and burning fat. This reduced the effects of their diabetes after a few weeks.

The study used 20 volunteers: 10 with type 2 diabetes and 10 without. The team used MRI scanners to measure how well the volunteers burned energy in their leg muscles before and after taking part in an eight-week long trial.

Michael Trenell who led the study said:

"This gives people an immediate way to control diabetes without any additional drugs. It’s a simple message."

Iain Frame of Diabetes UK commented that the study showed that "even gentle exercise is vital in managing type 2 diabetes."
