Tree Nut Substitutes And Eating Out
If you are allergic to tree nuts, you have to live without them. You may be able to eat peanuts and possibly other tree nuts, but it’s not recommended and you must be allergy tested first. Only you and your doctor can work out exactly what you can and can’t eat.
Home Cooking
The use of tree nuts in cooking is rare but sometimes tree nut butter is used in Caribbean cooking.
With careful management and organisation you can still enjoy eating out with a tree nut allergy.Tanya Wright, Dietitian
Try one of these alternatives.
- Use one part cornflour to two parts liquid.
- A roux of butter and flour can be used. Remember - the longer a roux is cooked, the richer it becomes.
- A dash of cream or yoghurt.
- A paste made by mixing flour with cold milk or stock.
- Tomato puree.
Nuts are frequently used in Indian cooking, especially in masalas and kormas. Creamed coconut and yoghurt are excellent substitutes here.
Grocery Shopping
Many supermarkets, specialist shops and online stores stock a variety of tree nut and nut free products.
