What Is A Vegan?
A vegan is someone who doesn’t eat animals or use products that come from animals. Vegans eat a plant-based diet that excludes foods such as fish, red meat, poultry, dairy products and even honey.
Vegans won’t use leather, wool or silk goods for clothing or other intentions, because they also come from animals.
The History Of Veganism In The UK
The Vegan Society was founded in 1944 by a group of ‘non-dairy vegetarians’. They wanted to promote a completely livestock-free lifestyle and differentiate themselves from vegetarians. They did this by creating a new word to describe themselves: ‘vegan’.
Since 1944, interest in living a vegan lifestyle has steadily grown. Factors such as mass food production and animal cruelty have played a part in this. Many people want to totally eliminate the use of animals in their diet and lifestyle. As a result, The Vegan Society is now a charitable organisation, as well as a limited company. Their mission is to encourage veganism and the philosophy that animals should not be used for food, clothing or any other purpose.
The Vegan Society educates and helps vegans to find animal-free foods and other products. They also publish books and magazines, trademark vegan products and provide the facts on veganism to the public.
